Montreal - Food and Observations

I spent the past week in Montreal for training and thought it was a lovely city - at least the Old Montreal portion where I was.   As I was looking through my photos, they fell into food, observations, and history.  I'll cover the first two here.

Weather:  it's still cold here.  It was 45 and drizzly during the work week and sunny but cold yesterday.  The first day I arrived was sunny and 60 and the city was out in Old Port where everyone was eating ice cream and remarking about how unbelievably beautiful the day turned out.  Reminded me of Chicago a few weeks ago -- both the weather and the happy residents coming out of hibernation.  There were still chunks of ice on the river.  And I think Danger Chute de Glace!  sounds so much more intimidating that the Caution Falling Ice signs we have around here.   The tourguide on my walking tour actually pointed out how horrible French-style roof construction is for icy cities.   That - and the fact that the parking meters are so far away from the street to allow for snow clearing - were totally worth the price of the tour!

My first "meal" in Montreal was Poutine de Quebec - traditional style poutine.  It is freshly fried fries covered with gravy and topped with cheese curds.  Hot gravy will eventually melt cheese curds.  I thought it was good, but after about half my stomach said enough!  During the week, I tried poutine at another restaurant.  This one also added pulled pork.  I didn't like the pork and the fries were a little soggy, so definitely not as good as what I got at the food court place.

Randomly saw the in the city.  Made me think of the Walt Disney World Tower of Terror ride.
Canadians love their hockey!  Lots of Canadiens (aka Habs) sweaters were on statues around the city.  And this statute in the town square had tattoos on the faces.  We went to a brew pub on our free night to watch the hockey game, and I enjoyed a Margarita Blonde (blonde beer, tequila and lime juice).

I couldn't go to Canada without visiting Tim Horton's, eh?  There was one (along with a Starbucks) on the block of my hotel.   Breakfast of champions right there.  A friend also recommended Muru for crepes.  Now THAT was a delicious lunch!

Rachel's 14th Birthday

Today is Rachel's 14th birthday!  She turned newlyweds in a little family on Father's Day weekend 2001.   I was very unsure about getting such a big dog, but John had no doubt.  He chose the giant, fluffy, 10 pound dog hiding underneath the shelter.  Her 5 little brothers and sisters had been chasing us around the yard nipping at our heels the whole time we were there.   Happy we got the quiet, snuggly one!

I got a new laptop last week, so it gave me a chance to come across some old pictures.  Below are a few of my favorites of Rachel "growing up."  The last one is a current photo.  She's getting gray around the nose and her back legs don't work very well.  But she's still spunky and sweet.
Life jacket so she could ride on the Koudele's boat.
She was much harder to lift out of the water than Casper their Westie!
Sharing the spotlight with first best friend, Daisy, at Daisy's going away party.
She's gray around the face and her back legs don't always work, but she's still boy's best friend.

Spring and Other Fun Stuff

I'm way behind on blogging, so I'll present the spring highlights:

Our neighbor needed bed rails for her three year old transitioning to a big kid bed, so it was the perfect excuse to finally take them off ours.   No problems with falling out of bed, but strangely, I think it makes the bed feel smaller.   Probably because when I'm in there resting with him for a few minutes, I don't have the mesh rail holding me in!  I just realize his awesome sports comforter is covered up in these pictures.  It's pretty lightweight and this was winter, so we had the extra blankets on still.

Although William didn't have any problems sleeping in the rail-free bed, he did decide he would rather create a "hang out spot" one Friday night in our bedroom closet.   I'm a good sport (or was already in bed and had no energy to protest), so he got to create a campsite and spend Friday and Saturday nights sleeping in the closet.   He made himself some pretty comfy digs (including that pillow mattress and moved in all of his favorite books, stuffed animals, some plastic power tool toys. . . .  I joked with John that he was ready for dorm room life.   He slept well both nights, but I did clean it out and make him go back to his own room for the school night.

Soccer is underway.  This is the first time he has played park district sports with his schoolmates.  They practice one night per week and have games on Saturdays.   The first practice was cancelled due to wet fields from melting snow.   He's doing alright but isn't as confident or aggressive as when he played indoors.   There are also several of his buddies on the team, and they get easily distracted being goofy with each other.  This week coach brought juice boxes for after the game, and he said it was his trophy!  He was so excited!

Legos:  we play with them a lot.  He creates the models from the sets and then (except for the AT-AT) cannibalizes parts to make new things.  I'm very impressed with the creativity.  If you zoom in you can see the ecclectic mix of mini-figures hitching a ride.  I've decided this is how boys play with dolls.   He also frequently draws Lego robots or uses them as writing examples  The worksheet below translates as I like to play Legos with my dad and my mom and my uncle.

Another trip to the dentist where he was an excellent patient. I thought he may have worn that shirt to the dentist last year, so I wanted to find it and link to it to see how much his clothes have shrunk!  We were using up the rest of these smaller jeans and just throwing them away when the knees wore out.  The new, larger size have now been fully worked into the rotation.  He asked me to take the picture of him wearing the sunglasses "like a mustache."

We re-discovered Red Robin burger restaurant after getting a gift card for Christmas.  It's right by our house, so we have been there twice now.   William almost likes the wait so he can draw with chalk.  I think the food is at least as good as our other favorite -- Buffalo Wild Wings --  but I keep ordering gross drinks.  I think I'll just have to get a bottled beer next time.  Their margarita was horrible!

Spring break was the week leading up to Easter.  The guys went to John's parents for a few days, and the other days William went to YMCA camp.  I just worked.   This was my 14th winter/spring busy season.   I'd say it was probably one of the top 5 "best" as far as not too many hours and not too stressful.   Maybe I'm just getting tougher!  I definitely know I'm getting older, so it's probably just that the "kids" are the ones doing the late hours now.
We reached an important milestone for kindergarten.  This is the last (giant) batch of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for school lunches.  I think this was 32 sandwiches.  I've never made a batch this big, but I regularly do two loaves of regular white bread at once (18 sandwiches) and notices we had a ton of the sandwich rounds in the freezer.  This summer, we will take our break from sandwiches since he will eat at daycare.  I guess we'll discuss in August whether he wants to buy lunch or keep up with the pb&j!

Easter Day

For the 6th year in a row, we celebrate with Chickster the Easter basket.  (The name was new this year!)   We saved all the candy for the eggs and the Easter basket had a beach hat, socks, t-shirt, and some Angry Bird Star Wars figures.   We did a hunt in the front yard before heading to Chicago.  Ryan hosted 9 of us for a delicious brunch and Tarek surprised him with a birthday cake.  After we had eaten WAY too much, we went to the park to play some games and enjoy the beautiful weather.  Even Ernie the cat came out to play!

Easter Preparations

Easter has easily become my favorite holiday.  I get to spend the weekend with family after a long busy season.  The weather is starting to warm up.  The flowers are sprouting  The neighborhood comes out from hibernation the day of the subdivision Easter egg hunt.

Will and his buddies did the hunt mostly by themselves this year.  They were cute, but I didn't get as many pictures since they were running away from my instead of standing still!   We also dyed eggs for the first time this year.   I was pretty tired of eggs after a week of hair-boiled eggs and egg salad!
